“What Kind of Citizen?”

Below is an excerpt from a book by Joel Westheimer titled “What Kind of Citizen”:
“All schools teach citizenship. The concern of this book has been to ask, What kind of citizenship? What political and ideological interests are embedded in varied conceptions of citizenship? What kind of citizens are the schools trying to shape? Varied priorities—personal responsibility, participatory citizenship, and justice-oriented citizenship—embody significantly different beliefs regarding the capacities and commitments citizens need in order for democracy to flourish; and they carry significantly different implications for pedagogy, curriculum, evaluation, and education policy” (Westheimer 2015, p. 97).
